| Customer Profile |
Thomas D. Mangelsen, a Nebraska native, is recognized as one of the world's premier nature photographers. Mangelsen's Images of Nature Galleries, located across the United States, showcase and sell Tom's incredible photography. Tom's accolades and critical acclaim range from being named BBC's "Wildlife Photographer of the Year" in 1994 and the North American Nature Photographer's "Outstanding Nature Photographer of the Year" in 2000, to the recipient of a Royal Photographic Society Honorary Fellowship in 2002. In 2005, he was named "One of the 100 Most Important People in Photography" by American Photo Magazine, one of only two wildlife-environmental photographers selected for the list. Tom's photography has also been published in leading magazines such as Audubon, National Geographic, Life, Wildlife Art and National Wildlife and featured on television programs from The Today Show and Good Morning America, to CNN's World News and ABC's World News Tonight with Peter Jennings.

| The Challenge |
In late November of 2008, Dana Henrickson, Mangelsen's President, signed a 3 year extension to use Warp 9's ICS e-commerce platform for Thomas Mangelsen's Images of Nature website. During that process, some of Mangelsen's future goals for the next year were discussed. Among them was an initiative to display more framed and matted finished images to consumers, which they had just begun implementing.
But there was a BIG problem! The process they were using was extremely time intensive:
- An image was selected.
- That image was physically framed and matted.
- The framed image was then taken to a studio environment to shoot some digital images for the website.
- The digital images were then proofed and the best image was selected.
- The selected digital image then underwent a color correction process to accurately portray the mat, frame, and image colors.
- That image was then sized to 3 image sizes required for display on the website.
When one considers that there are 125 frame choices, 60 mat colors, and 1,000 images, resulting in 7,500,000 potential combinations, this had the makings of being quite a labor and time intensive process, to say the least.
|
| The Solution |
Upon hearing the very labor and time intensive process that was being undertaken, the Warp 9 team asked for some sample imagery and produced a rough prototype application in one week and a final process in two weeks.
The benefits of Warp 9's image conversion application:
- no more lighting problems
- no more time consuming photo shoots required
- no color correction required
- crisper, sharper image, mat, and frame images
- automatic digital v-groove, mat, and double-mat creation
- automatic "stretch" framing
- automatic web optimization
- automatic watermarking
- automatic meta-data tagging
|
|
|
In the new process, Mangelsen staff simply chooses the mat colors and frame they wish to use with each image. Warp 9's image conversion application automatically creates the correct mat colors, v-groove, calculates the mat overlay amount, adds meta-data, imprints a visual watermark, and frames the picture in any dimension combination.
Now, with a few clicks, complex framed, finished photographs can be created and showcased to consumers - further solidifying Mangelsen's as the definitive destination for Images of Nature on the web.
